Sleeping back in time or the closest to it (Manila Hotel experience)

The final submissions to obtain my Ph.D. was so stressful I had to recover sanity points as I call it. I love travel. I love food. However, there’s something about being with family that keeps one sane. Don’t you agree? So this year, I went back home for a few days and stayed at this beautiful hotel with my family and my parents’ favorite apo (granddaughter from my cousin).

The first part of this post is about our stay overnight with buffet breakfast. The second part is about my birthday dinner a year ago, 2016 in the same venue.

Thanks to Dealgrocer, one of my favorite online deal sites, I was able to purchase rooms and dinner vouchers for a discount. Everytime I plan to go home to the Philippines, I always check if there are available deals I could take advantage of. I puchased several deals in this site from dining to various items and I have never been disappointed yet (talk about a 3pcs. Benetton luggage set that only costed me about 100USD :P).

This time I was able to purchase vouchers for double rooms with breakfast buffet. Owing to my birthday dinner here (2nd section of this post which was only about dining), my expectations were fueled in experiencing this hotel at its fullest.

I was also craving for a decent gym. Being a fitness enthusiast, I try to keep fit even when traveling or going to my own country despite counterbalancing it with binging out. LOL. And man, this hotel had an extensive fitness facility (no photos though 😦 )!

To keep things brief, I inserted a few sentences to describe the experience together with pictures. The Manila Hotel, ladies and gentlemen. Enjoy.

First part 前半:

View for the 14th floor

My mom and another apo looking at the view. This was my and my sis’ room. I prefer to sleep separately due to my ultrasupermegasensitivity to sounds and light and anything breathes. LOL

Very busy port area

Manila Hotel generously provided me my request to be at the highest possible floor facing the bay, the 14th floor (I think). It rained and with the clouds was also the absence of the famed Manila bay sunset. Oh well.

After a really good workout I decided to take a dip. My sister, and cousins were also swimming. By the time I dipped, the water was already chilly. It was fine at first as my body was still warm from exercising but after some time, I had to surrender to warm and fluffy bathrobes and pillowy towels. They were so comfortable my sister wanted to buy the hotel’s bathrobe and I couldn’t blame her.

DSC03318

Aside from a fruit basket upon checking in, a room service attendant went around passing delicious truffles! I took the door, got the chocolates for my parents’ and my room. The chocolates were like mille feuille of almonds. I popped two in my mouth, felt greedy and put them in my bag and forgot about them. Days later, I saw my bag being trailed on by ants. Lesson learned. LOL

wDSC03330

Christmas season in the Philippines starts by the first “-ber” month September. This was December. Very grand decor. I love these huge chandeliers and the wooden polished ceiling and the marble floors. Grand, warm, historic. Being in this space literally felt like being in the National Museum of the Philippines also in Manila.

Like something out of a Children’s book

After dinner outside the hotel complex, my parents went back to their room while I and sis had our sibling time drinking. I drank alcohol. She drank a mocktail. LOL. Because December is very festive, it couldn’t be helped that even the bar was rented for an event. We had to wait for a few minutes to access the classy-cozy Tap Room bar.

姉さんはmocktail(偽物のコックテール)を注文した。

DSC03405

I had a signature cocktail that was citrusy (with gin) and with some grenadine while my sister had a mocktail of juice and tea. Both were very refreshing but mine had a kick! Prices here, although not normal in Manila, were typical in Japan (~¥400-600) so its understandable that it could be of a shock at first. There were several interesting drinks using local ingredients such as calamansi or coconut sap wine but I could only drink so much right? LOL.

I decided to have something sweet and dessert-like. I got a chocolate martini as my second.

DSC03412

While chatting about life, I and sis were practicing with our food presentation skills. How about scattered nuts on a napkin? LOL

And then it was time to call it a day. The beds were comfortable like firm cotton that sucks you in and never lets go. LOL. I rarely sleep well on other beds but this was something I would take with me whereever. The pillows were too many it was complicated but it’s a good thing. LOL

Queen size bed in the double occupancy room. Dont you love the Capiz shell lining of the headboard?

For breakfast, the 5 of us (including the apo) went to Cafe Ilang Ilang for a really heavy sustainance of energy. In my case, I did a pretty heavy leg workout before this so I paid in advance for the calories. LOL.

Taho

However, the part of the buffet that made me giddy was Taho! Taho is a very very delicate tofu (like silken tofu but waaaay more delicate! I believe it has to be made on the day of retail or else it will turn to silken tofu or the firmer varieties) served warm and topped with tapioca pearls and unrefined sugar syrup. While this could not hold a candle to the local, “dirty” but not literally dirty taho, this satisfied my weeklong craving! Taho is very similar to Doufa served in Taiwanese restaurants.

Are taho vendors in Manila going extinct? 😦

Not in the pictures were the deli spread, juice bar, cereal bar, Chinese breakfast (because Manila is home of Filipino-Chinese families), etc. I loved the home-made meatloaf that could put Spam out of business (If that is even possible…I mean Spam is Spam!).

DSC03439
Oh so delicious meatloaf!

The breakfast spread was overwhelming but the content and sections were much limited than the dinner buffet as could be seen below. For example, no Italian and Japanese section was present for breakfast. Likewise, there were no Peking duck and dumplings in the morning! (Am I weird to wish for Peking duck for breakfast?) LOL.

DSC03514
This photo looks like something from a beach resort

After breakfast, we toured our parents around the hotel facilities, showered and SADLY checked out.

It was a lovely stay; a really lovely stay that deserves a second-time around despite the hotel being within 30mins car ride from our house. LOL

Second part 後半:

These are just photos with brief descriptions of the buffet dinner back in August 2016. Enjoy

Hor d’oeuvres.

Scallops. Manila has affordable seafood!
DSC00777
Homemade gelatos and sorbets! Loved the raspberry!
DSC00778
Cakes. I tried them all! The Opera cake was lovely!
DSC00779
More cakes! buttery pistachio. If only I could put these in my pockets. LOL
DSC00782
Tarts. Yes, I had these too!
DSC00784
My dad loved the chocolate fountain. LOL
DSC00785
Some boiled seafood. I saved space for the Peking duck! lol
DSC00786
Some delis. I’m not into ham when there’s Peking duck! lol
DSC00788
And yes! The Peking not pecking duck. LOL. they’re in their eternal slumber.

If you’re early, you can get the duck without the rice pancake wrapper. I prefer duck as it is.

With the food choices here, it is wise to save space for the priority items a.k.a. cakes!

DSC00803
These were too tempting to pass
DSC00804
These were fine to pass. LOL. Not that bad but not great either. The dimsums were better alternatives! Dimsums are raviolis anyway right? LOL
DSC00839
Non-Christmas decor. Grand lobby
DSC00841
The hallways without people are beautiful. lol
DSC00851
The chandelier. the detail in this!
DSC00857
A piece of history…that’s not marijuana by the way. LOL
DSC00862
After dinner, we said we will come back to stay here and we did! 🙂

Price: I got the rooms with breakfast for 5800 pesos (US$130) /room/night and the buffet dinner for 4 at about the same price. Dealgrocer vouchers can save you a lot if you plan to stay or dine here. The good thing is that there is usually always a Manila Hotel promo in the site.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a paid review. All expenses covered in these experiences (dining and accommodation) were paid by me. m(_ _)m

Location: Check the map below. It is near the famous Rizal park.
